Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of the Flume Gorge, nestled at the base of Mount Liberty. This natural wonder spans 800 feet, with granite walls reaching heights of 70 to 90 feet and spaced 12 to 20 feet apart. Embark on the 2-mile Flume Trail loop from the check-in booths near the Flume Building. While the Short Trail/Rim Path is closed, the full loop promises an unforgettable journey lasting about 1.5 hours, concluding at the Flume Building. Prepare for uphill walks and stair climbs, but be rewarded with up-close views of vibrant flora along the boardwalk. It's an enchanting adventure for nature enthusiasts!
A Bit of Flume’s History
In 1808, the remarkable Flume Gorge was stumbled upon by the adventurous 93-year-old "Aunt" Jess Guernsey while fishing. Initially met with skepticism from her family, she eventually convinced others to witness the marvel. At that time, a massive egg-shaped boulder, measuring 10 feet high and 12 feet long, hung suspended between the gorge walls. However, a powerful rainstorm in June 1883 triggered a landslide, dislodging the boulder, which has never been recovered. This same storm also deepened the gorge and shaped Avalanche Falls, leaving behind a testament to the forces of nature.
